Description

⚫ English:

The magnificent building that houses the Italian Cultural Institute of Madrid is popularly known as Palacio de Abrantes and stands in the historic center of the capital, within the area called "the Madrid de los Austrias".
The building itself dates back to 1652, when Don Juan de Valencia "El Infante" - a nobleman who had the unique position of "Major Secret Spy in the Council of Her Majesty" - acquired five adjoining houses that stood in this area to build a palace; the building was soon (1656) at the hands of Antonio Valdes and Ossorio, Knight of Alcántara in the reign of Philip IV. Already in 1669 the building became the property of the Marquis of Alcañices, successively and frequently changing owners to fall into the hands of the local gentry, often penniless and needy. For this reason, during the eighteenth and part of the nineteenth the inside of the palace was subdivided, rented or even intended to house the servants.
In 1842 the Dukes of Abrantes purchased the building and restored it partly giving the physiognomy it presents today and the name by which he is known.

⚫ Castellano:
