Description

The parish has a Neo-Gothic style, designed by D. Francisco de Cubas and Gonzalez-Montes (Marques de Cubas) succeeded by his beloved disciple, the architect Miguel de Olabarría, assisted by D. Ricardo Guereta and D. Juan Moya.
The front does not have a definite style and precise. It gives accused details of Moorish (Mudéjar) and Gothic style in a very harmonious blend with a magnificent tympanum above the door representing the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, (a work by Aniceto Marinas)
It was a chapel in ancient times and then was entitled to parish from the time of the Arabs, being immediate field populated by the Christians who were living outside the town. After the conquest of Madrid, it became the more extensive parish of the jurisdiction, because of the many farmhouses that had towards the sanctuary of Atocha.
It appears that the parish life began in the first half of the thirteenth century.
The first parish church would be built probably at the time of the Catholic Monarchs (last decades of the fifteenth century) and was located in the Plaza de Santa Cruz, corner of Calle de la Bolsa.
