Description

The square has a sculpture collection of twenty Spanish kings corresponding to five Visigoth kings and fifteen of the first Christian kingdoms of the Reconquest. These statues, made of limestone, are distributed in two rows that cross the site east-west, on both sides of the central gardens.

Popularly known as the Gothic kings, this group marks the dividing line between the main body of the square and the Noval Gardens at north, and the Lepanto in the south.

The group of statues is part of a series devoted to all the monarchs of Spain, sent to decorate the Royal Palace during the reign of Ferdinand VI. They Were executed between 1750 and 1753.

At first , the idea was that the sculptures adorn the upper cornice of the palace, but they were never placed in there. It was feared that the cover couldn't stand the heavy weight, but the tradition holds that Queen Barbara de Braganza had a dream in which the figures apocalyptically precipitating fell down.

Finally were distributed by different parts of the city: in Plaza de Oriente, in the Park of El Retiro, in the Sabatini Gardens, in El Capricho Park (on Alameda de Osuna) and Puerta de Toledo. Some were taken to other provinces, like in Paseo de Sarasate in Pamplona, where there are Navarre kings or in Paseo del Espolón in Burgos.

The statues were made under the direction of the court sculptors Juan Domingo Olivieri and Felipe de Castro. By a large group of authors, including those found Luis Salvador Carmona, Felipe del Corral, Juan de Villanueva and Juan Pascual Barbales Mena, besides the actual Olivieri and De Castro.
